It It Time To Reset Your Goals?

In fitness and nutrition, we talk a lot about goal setting, accomplishing those goals and then setting new ones once we've achieved a desired outcome. But, what if the goal should be reset before that? Resetting goals is something that should be discussed more often as it can be just as important as setting them in the first place.

You should take the time to reset your goals if:

  1. You're being inconsistent with what you're doing now. If you've been wanting to run a 5K, lose some weight, get stronger or achieve any other goal but you're not putting enough effort in to get there, then it might be time to reevaluate your goals. If you cannot stay consistent, maybe you're not ready for it, or it doesn't mean enough to you at this time, to keep going forward. This is a good time to check-in with yourself on what you really want.

  2. You're just going through the motions. If you're finding yourself just going through the motions, it's definitely time to reset some goals for yourself. This means that you're working out but not enjoying it, aren't pushing yourself in the same way, aren't following through some of the time, or are just feeling meh about everything.

  3. Your priorities have changed. Maybe you set out on weight loss but have fell in love with getting stronger. Perhaps you wanted to get stronger but you realized you need a lot more flexibility to feel good. It's even possible that with the kids schedule, the holidays coming up and everything else on your plate that you just want to maintain where you're at right now. Whatever it is, it's important to identify the change so you can get working on that new goal instead.

Let's make it clear that resetting your goals does not make you a failure--it doesn't mean you couldn't do it, couldn't stick with it, etc.--it just means that that particular goal isn't motivating you right this second.

You're better off resetting your goals, then continuously trying to meet one that's not working for you.

On the flip side, sometimes resetting goals, or adding new ones may be just the motivation you need to keep yourself going!
